Skype is the greatest free application for talking with people over the internet. The quality is phenomenal - better than cell phones! You can install it in minutes and communicate with anyone over the internet who has Skype. Their logo is to the right.
Also, you can "upgrade" the application for extremely little $$$. For example, I needed an office phone. So I purchased a phone number from Skype for $5 a month and added unlimited calls to anywhere in the U.S. and Canada for an additional $3. Way cheaper than the phone company.
The coolest part - the phone goes wherever I login on Skype. I even have voicemail, call forwarding, and I do Video conferencing with Skype too!
I video with my Microsoft VX 6000 camera to kids grandparents with their Microsoft VX 3000 web camera and Skype. The quality is amazing!
The best quality comes from using a headset with a microphone but I went wireless with the Microsoft Lifechat 6000 headset.
