VMWare Server Install Fails

4:51 PM
In the day-and-life of virtualization it is inevitable that I have to upgrade the virtualization technology. Well, while upgrading VMWare server from 1.0.4 to 1.0.8 I ran into a snag. Encountered the following error:

Warning 25301. IIS configuration failed (131073). You will have to configure the VMWare site manually.

What !?! (Isn't that what the installer is for?). So I pieced some information together from a couple of googlings and here is what worked at the end of the day:
  1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services
  2. Expand the websites until you get to the VMWare Management Interface.
  3. Right-click on the website and select Stop.
  4. Leave IIS open. You will come back to it later.
  5. Double-click on the VMWare server installation executable. Use the executable - not what is in the Add/Remove control panel.
  6. Click Next on the welcome dialog.
  7. Select MODIFY for the option and click NEXT.
  8. Click on the VMWare Management Interface and select " ..not installed....."
  9. Click Next and Finish.
  10. Run the VMWare Server executable installer again.
  11. Select MODIFY for the option and click NEXT.
  12. Click on the VMWare Management Interface and select "..installed.."
  13. Click Install
  14. Click Finish.
  15. Go back to IIS and see if it is running. If not, right-click and select Start.

Thanks for the post. Helped me out a lot. You would think that VMware would have fixed their installer.

I've got a blog similar to yours, although clearly you've got a lot more going on. My biggest hit is repairing a Samsung 204b monitor.
