Windows 8.1 - The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

The Windows 8.1 release has not shipped yet (or available for download for consumers).

Expect it sometime in August.  

But, here is a list of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly




Say Hello to:
  • Windows Start Menu. But I just got used to it...
  • Boot to desktop. Great for desktops and fresh converts. 
  • More windows snap features. Three to a screen, span monitors.
  • Better support for IT admins. Read more.
  • Peek.  Enable the ability to peek at open apps by hovering over Start Menu.
  • Keyboard Shortcuts.  See shortcuts on the built-in keyboard.
  • Food & Drink App.  Track recipes, read articles, shopping lists. 
  • Health & Fitness App. Calorie counter, symptom genie, and more. 
  • More 3D Printer Drivers.  Gonna get or of these!
  • Tethering Support. For tablets, mobile devices. Nice.
  • Customizable Lock Screen and Home Screen. Live tiles too.
  • Resizable Tiles and Windows. 'bout time!
  • Enhanced Security Features. Device encryption, featurencrypt adios editions for managing encryption. 
  • Windows Photo App.  Some photo editing features.  Changes in how photos are gathered
  • SkyDrive Sync. Tighter integration. 
Say Goodbye to:
  • Exerience Index Rating.  Adios.  
  • Microsoft Chat.  Microsoft bought Skype. This is where they are headed. 
  • Backup & Image Recovery.  You'll have to get a third party app such as Acronis, Novastor, etc.
  • Facebook App.  No built-in integration any more.  Someone will make a replacement. 
  • Calendar Integration.  No more support for Google calendar
Hidden, but you can enable:
  • Libraries.  Go to File Explorer > Navigation Pane > Show Libraries
