Restore failed for Server

5:00 AM
Ever get that dreaded

"Restore failed for Server . (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)Additional information:System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backup set holds a backup of a database other than the existing . (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)"

It happens when you make a backup of a database (such as Prod) and you want to restore it to another database (such as QA). There is an easy fix.

In SQL Server Management Studio, prior to doing the restore, go to the Options screen and select "Overwrite the existing database".

Applies to: SQL Server 2000/2005/2008
